LusiaMariarts: A Professional Summary:
Luisa has worked as a printing assistant, and “keyline and paste-up” graphic artist at a variety of commercial art companies over the course of 5-6 years. She also worked as the Advertising Production Manager at The Sentinel, a Jewish American news magazine. After which, she went on to become the Art Director for the Catalog Department at Boise Cascade.
Eventually she left the commercial and graphic arts world to focus on sharing her artistic gifts with others. This included conducting art classes for indigent adults residing in S.R.O. (Single Room Occupancy) buildings throughout Chicago’s north side.
For a period of time, she taught art to elderly men and women diagnosed with Alzheimer and Dementia while employed at the City of Chicago at Senior Day Care Center.
Luisa was also a community art teacher, working with Chicago’s inner-city youth of culturally and ethnically diverse backgrounds, who were brought together in a community based project which taught them to create and share their personal stories through the Arts—using song, dance, acting, sculpting and painting to do so. The community based project was called “S.O.U.L. -- stories of urban life / Scrap Mettle.”
She then assisted the youth in developing personal history-related questions; and how to use tape recorders to obtain oral histories when they visited nursing homes or historical societies.
She coordinated the youth, who interviewed, listened and recorded older residents while they conveyed their personal stories and perceptions about “the changing times” which they’d lived through in Chicago’s oldest north side neighborhood.
Utilizing donated spaces and materials, the youth of S.O.U.L. worked together to build stages, write dialogue, compose music and lyrics, and choreograph dances to bring these oral histories to theatrical life.
The youth publicly presented their performance several times in the North Chicago community, and presented excerpts several additional times throughout the greater Chicago area.
In addition to teaching art throughout the Greater Chicago area, Luisa has served as a Selection Committee Member for the rotating exhibits at Gallery She-She at the Three Arts Club in Chicago.
Most recently Luisa enjoys using her art skills as an educational volunteer in elementary schools for both New Mexico (2 years) and Texas (four years).
When working with ADHD students, she effectively integrates the art making process in her one-on-one tutoring methods, to either relax or stimulate the students.
She continues to use art as way to assist them to better express themselves, and as a way to encourage and enable them to read better and more often.
